Ever
since I was a little girl, I've always loved movies. I trace my
love for movies back to when I was a young girl, riding in the
back of the family station wagon in my pajamas, going to the drive-in
on Saturday nights to see movies like Clint Eastwood in "Hang
Em High", and Raquel Welch in "One Million Years B.C."
I remember happily standing in line with my dad to see movies
like "2001: Space Odyssey, "JD's Revenge", "Enter
The Dragon", "Jaws", and "The Godfather".
I
was born and raised on the small island town of Alameda, California
where my father served as the first African-American city council
member and vice mayor. My mother was born in Augsburg, Germany
and met my father in Germany while he served in the army. I graduated
from St. Mary's College, Orinda, CA with a business degree in
management.
As
I grew older I became fascinated by how movies were made, and
devoured books like "Rebel Without A Crew", by Robert
Rodriquez, and "Making Movies" by Sidney Lumet. I took
screenwriting classes at UC Berkeley Extension.
After
working years in the corporate field primarily on a computer,
in a non-ergonomic office setting, I developed tendonitis, burning
forearms, neck strain, and had to retire due to this work-related
injury. I went through vocational training, took a battery of
tests to determine a new career, and the results showed I had
a high interest in the arts. One day I saw an article in the newspaper
on voice over careers, and I contacted the instructor, Taylor
Korobow, of The Voice Factory, in San Francisco. I've always received
compliments on my voice and I thought this would be a viable career
choice that would not require me to work on a computer all day.
I loved studying with her and eventually signed with Look Talent
Agency in S.F., and booked two national voiceover commercials.
Voiceover acting fueled my desire for on-camera acting, and I
studied commercial and scene study acting with the dynamic John
Howard Swain of Full Circle Productions in San Francisco, CA.
My
passion for acting further ignited in 1997 after I performed my
first stage role in the psychological drama " Do You Have
Time To Die" written and directed by Imani Harrington at
the Black Repertory Theater in Berkeley, CA. I continued acting
in community theater, commercial, and independent film productions
in the S.F. Bay Area.
My
first film role was in the low-budget independent action film
"Simple & Safe", written and directed by Ryan McKinney,
where I play Agent Reed, a bad girl CIA agent who both seduces
and tortures her opponents with her butterfly knife.
This action adventure film was shot entirely on digital video
with one Canon XL-1 Camera, in over 70 locations in Northern California,
with a budget of $19,700.
In
December of 2002, I moved to Los Angeles to further my acting
career opportunities and found a wonderful acting class studying
with Mailon Rivera of Native Dance Productions. I also found Michael
Pointer's "Hey I Saw Your Commercial!" class to be one
of the best commercial classes around.
I
met a talented, committed, independent writer/director Van Elder,
and learned a lot from him about making quality low budget independent
films. I served as associate producer on his short film, "Out
Of Body Experience" which is winning festival awards across
the nation. After reading his first feature length script called
"Issues", I realized that my house that I share with
two roommates, could easily serve as the main location to shoot,
and there was the role of "Mrs. Jones" that I wanted
to play, so I agreed to produce it. Producing on low budget films,
includes being the caterer, driver, set dresser, prop master,
therapist, janitor, wardrobe, craft service, and person that carries
stuff. Though intense and stressful, I loved and valued the experience!
"Issues", written, directed, and edited by Van Elder,
was amazingly shot over a period of 8 days in Super 16mm format
using local locations in and around Inglewood, CA. A very talented
cast and crew accomplished shooting a delightful, funny, "un"
romantic comedy that I'm confident will be a hit with audiences. |
